He made a name for himself in the Bay Area on KNBR 680 The Sports Leader for nine years.  For six of those years he was the morning show’s resident sports authority. While at The Sports Leader, Townsend also hosted pre and post game shows for the San Francisco 49ers, San Francisco Giants and Golden State Warriors on top of producing and creating pre-game segments during Giants national broadcasts.

In addition to anchoring KNBR’s coverage of the AT&T National Pro AM for six years, Chris has also covered the 1998 US Open at the Olympic Club, 2000 US Open at Pebble Beach, Super Bowl XXXVII, 2003 Final Four, and the 2002 World Series, and was a regular contributor on FSN Bay Area’s 49ers All Access in 2003.

He came to the Bay Area in the early 90’s on a baseball scholarship to San Jose State University earning team captain honors his senior year. He earned his degree in radio, television and film.

Its no surprise Chris enjoyed success on the diamond. His grandfather, seven time all-star Bob Elliott, was named the National League MVP in 1947 becoming the first third baseman in baseball history to win the award.
